He is coming off a disappointing 10-15 season last year during which he had a career-high 5.17 ERA.The Tigers (0-4) signed the 2003 NL rookie of the year and 2005 runner-up for the NL Cy Young Award to a $29 million, three-year deal in December, during a series of offseason moves that led to the second-highest payroll in the major leagues at $138.7 million.There are concerns about Willis' health, however, after he dealt with forearm issues last year, and the left-hander struggled during spring training, failing to alleviate those worries."I just hope that it clicks when the bell rings," Willis told MLB.com. That's where the good news ends for Minnesota.The Twins look to press on after an injury to right fielder Michael Cuddyer when they continue their three-game series against Kansas City Saturday at the Metrodome.Minnesota (2-3) placed Cuddyer on the 15-day disabled list with a dislocated and lacerated right index finger following Friday's 4-3 win over the Royals (3-1).Cuddyer injured his finger in the third inning when he collided awkwardly with Kansas City's Alex Gordon on a head-first slide into third base, and had to go to the hospital to get stitches to close the gash."He probably won't be able to throw for at least two weeks," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said.Losing Cuddyer could be a huge blow to the Twins, as he has emerged as one of the main clubhouse leaders after Torii Hunter's departure for the Los Angeles Angels. Cuddyer also led the AL in outfield assists over the last two years.

He then went on to dominate nine playoff games, throwing 9 2-3 shutout innings with four saves as the Cardinals won their first World Series championship since 1982.Cardinals manager Tony La Russa then moved the right-hander into the rotation in 2007, and he was shaky through the first half -- going 7-7 with a 4.66 ERA while allowing opponents to hit .291 in 17 starts. However, he settled down and was impressive in the second half of the season with a 7-5 record and a 2.71 ERA, limiting batters to a .245 average.He finished the season with the most wins in franchise history for a first-year starter, and the team felt that was good enough to sign him to a four-year extension through 2013 in March.

Though Utley can't claim to have won the league's most prestigious individual award, he has finished in the top 10 in voting in each of the last two seasons -- his second and third as a full-time major-leaguer.Utley was considered one of the frontrunners last year, but a broken hand cost him a month of the season, and perhaps a shot at the trophy.Though that injury limited the All-Star second baseman to 132 games, Utley still managed to hit 22 home runs, drive in 103 runs and score 104 more, all while compiling a .332 batting average.He hasn't missed a beat in 2008, going 5-for-14 (.357) with a major league-leading three home runs, five RBIs and six runs scored without a strikeout in his first four games.Utley hit two homers to lead the Phillies (2-2) to an 8-4 victory in the opener of this series on Friday night. The second of those home runs was the 100th of his career.

However, the Blue Jays have looked like the dominant club in recent seasons when the division rivals have met.Since the start of the 2005 season, Toronto is 33-23 against Boston -- the most wins over the Red Sox by any opponent in that span. That trend continued in Friday night's home opener, won 6-3 by the Jays. Frank Thomas doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and Matt Stairs added a solo home run for Toronto.Starter Shawn Marcum limited the Red Sox to three hits while striking out eight over seven innings before a sellout crowd to help the Blue Jays improve to 24-8 in home openers.

The Cubs will try to get their slumping bats untracked on Saturday when they continue a three-game set against the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field.Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez have made a combined nine All-Star appearances -- Soriano and Lee played in last year's Midsummer Classic -- and the trio combined to hit .309 in 2007.But Chicago's three big bats have struggled thus far in 2008. While Fukudome is batting 6-for-12, Soriano, Lee and Ramirez are hitting a combined .148 (7-for-48) through four games, and the Cubs (1-3) have scored three runs or fewer in each of their losses.Fukudome had two more hits on Friday, while Soriano, Lee and Ramirez went a combined 2-for-12 as Houston (2-3) took the series opener 4-3.Things wouldn't seem to get easier on Saturday as two-time 20-game winner Roy Oswalt (0-1, 5.06 ERA) takes the hill for the Astros.Oswalt made his team-record sixth straight opening day start for Houston on Monday, but gave up three runs on 11 hits in just 5 1-3 innings in the team's 4-0 loss at San Diego.
